This is a semester course were students learn acting tools that are useful in everyday situations while communicating with others. The focus of this class is to empower students to present themselves clearly and professionally, teach students how to think on their feet, and show students gain respect and admiration in their community. Through the application and repetition of exercises, students learn how to empathize their strengths and turn any communication problem into a natural situation. Students will get the chance to practice these skills in a safe space and work on self-confidence.

Do you like theater and performing arts? You will love this class! You will be able to know, explore and act at a very deep level! Pre-AP Theater instruction highlights these skills as well, inviting students to analyze and respond to works of theater, develop and refine their own ideas by drawing on a variety of source material, and constructively respond to the work of peers as it develops. *Pre-AP courses are designed to support all students across varying levels of readiness. They are not honors or advanced courses. Participation in Pre-AP courses allows students to slow down and focus on the most essential and relevant concepts and skills.

Beginning Ensemble is a course for students who are willing to learn or already beginning to learn a rock band instrument (Drums, guitar, bass, keys, singing). In this class we will focus on instrument technique, exploring basic rock band elements, music theory and playing as a group. This class could be your gateway to the full Ensembles experiences throughout High School. This class is not expected to perform as much as the other ensembles, you are not selected based on audition videos and you can take it for a semester or the full year.

Ensemble I is planned as an Honors class. This course is designed for students who have a high level of musicianship and technique. In this class, students will focus on playing mainly rock and pop styles, but open to other musical genres that suit the ensemble setting based on the instruments accepted. Admission is granted on an audition basis to those who feel advanced on their instruments and confident in group playing. In this class you will experience playing music at a high level. Since it is a full year class the expectations for technique, leadership, and playing ability become higher. Students are graded on a tiered scale as they progress through the program. This course is meant to be taken for an entire year to support progress, however it can be taken for a semester on teacher approval. This Ensemble is expected to play actively throughout the year in local venues in the city, country or even internationally. (This class is aimed at guitar, electric bass, piano, drums, voice, but open to any other instruments).

This is the most advanced symphony band we offer at CNG and students will find a strong community within this course. Band is both a class and club. Students in band will play and perform at a high level. Students will rehearse music that they select, work with small groups, and play as a large band. Students get the chance to work with professional visiting artists, play different instruments, and be involved in a variety of different activities. Since students can take this class every year, the expectations for instrument technique, leadership, and playing ability are assessed at a higher level as students grow. This band will have the opportunity to travel, and perform outside of school throughout the year. (Orchestra players are very welcome).

Do you love music, but don’t like performing, then this is the course for you! Music is an art that you will interact with your whole life, it is useful to have a strong foundation to understand it. You will get the chance to explore the connection between music and culture, music and history, and music and your life. This is a great course to prepare you for any musical experience in the future. We will play, create, discuss, listen, analyze, produce, and enjoy music together.

Rumba is a one semester elective class where students choose to participate voluntarily in order to enjoy and develop skills in dancing. Students will experience aerobic entertainment using different rhythms: dancing music, samba, raggaeton, reggae, salsa, folklore, among others. Participation in this class will help increase functioning of the cardiovascular system, improve physical fitness, and heighten psychological well-being. Steps and circuits will be used in the class. This course can count as ½ credit in Fine Arts or Physical Education.

Latin Dance is a course focused on learning how to identify and dance some of the Latin American rhythms. The emphasis is on Salsa and it’s different styles; on one, on two, colombian style and the different cuban styles like Cha Cha Cha, Son, Casino and Rueda de Casino, we also learn how to dance Bachata and Kizomba. All of these dances are performed in partners and or in groups, which gives students the opportunity to enhance their social development while they learn how to create conversations through body language. Is a very good opportunity for students to learn how to treat and interact with partners in a very respectful manner. This course can count as ½ credit in Fine Arts or Physical Education.

THEATER I
COMEDY AND IMPROVISATION 9 - 12

This class offers a general overview of the world of theatre, focusing on your personal development as an actor and as a theatre enthusiast. Students will engage in games and exercises that stimulate the discovery of movement, space, voice and improvisation. Students will be exposed to a wide range of dramatic literature and will develop fundamental acting skills as a preparation for interpreting classical and contemporary texts. Students will be given opportunities to stretch their imagination, focus their creative energies, and work alone or in groups to bring their inter characters to life.

THEATER PRODUCTION AND DESIGN 9 - 12

A project-based class balancing theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience with theatre systems including audio, visual, video, staging, props and makeup. Students would work within the framework of the Design Thinking process to support projects from the school community (i.e. school musical). Developmentally appropriate for high school, assessments will focus on the performance of fundamental tasks and “do”s for operation of a theatre.

Grading is based on a tiered scale as students advance through the program. This year-long course requires an audition for placement, but do not worry, is just to determine which ensemble suits you better. Semester enrollment is possible only with teacher approval. Students will learn about musicianship, history, culture, and composition. Since students can take this class every year, the expectations for individual vocal technique, ensemble technique, theory and music reading skills become higher each year. Students will rehearse in large and small groups, and perform a variety of music including pop, a cappella, folk, world music, and classical. This choir will have opportunities to travel and perform throughout the year. Come ready to sing, create, explore, and grow together in music!

The music honors courses provide students with a challenging and innovative curriculum. This course is taught within the Symphonic or Choir course and may require students to complete additional projects, practice and prepare outside of class time and arrange to meet with the teacher as needed. The requirements for these courses provide a template for being a successful musician and allow students to experience what great musicians do. This year-long course is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have successfully completed previous band/chorus courses and have been recommended by their and/or have successfully completed an audition.
