Exceptional Learner Programs: Academic Supports

OUR ACADEMIC SUPPORTS

OVERVIEW OF INTERVENTIONS

We provide students with the targeted and focused intervention they may need in order to develop the essential and foundational skills needed to learn and grow. Academic interventions are usually offered outside the classroom and typically in addition to students full participation in the classroom and exposure to the grade level curriculum. Academic supports follow evidenced based intervention protocols and programs that are highly sequenced and structured in order to maximize our students learning and growth. We use multi-tier levels of support in order to identify students who may need additional intervention and systematic progress monitoring to measure students growth and response to the interventions provided.

OUR TEACHERS

  • Certified professionals with advanced degrees in different areas of education.
  • Trained in the use and implementation of evidenced-based interventions that can enhance students foundational learning skills and conceptual understanding.
  • Work collaboratively with general education teachers and other Learning Center professionals in order to maximize students growth and potential.
  • Use data to monitor students growth and adjust interventions based on students response.

WE OFFER INTERVENTIONS IN THE AREAS OF:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Math
  • Executive Functions
  • English Acquisition

MATH INTERVENTION

The math intervention support offers a research-based math intervention program for students identified as struggling with math or who require additional academic support. At CNG we use the Math Bridges Intervention which is one of the 3 components of the Math Bridges Program and is aligned with our core curriculum. Lessons are especially designed to provide additional opportunities to ll gaps in the critical areas of math learning. Each lesson is highly structured and carefully scaffolded.

READING INTERVENTIONS

At CNG we strive to ensure that students with language based learning differences get the targeted and focused interventions and supports to grow in their foundational literacy acquisition. We also support older students in learning to use technological resources that can help them to engage in the grade level activities in spite of their challenges on reading or writing.

MIDDLE SCHOOL LEARNING LAB

The Learning Lab is a class offered by Learning Center teachers for students with identified learning needs in Middle School. This class has the primary objective of teaching students to use effective learning strategies that can help them be self determined, active and independent learners. In order to achieve this, students get explicit instruction and practice on Executive Function skills, such as: organization, goal setting, planning, strategizing, attention, management of time and space. Additionally, in the Learning Lab students who may need more time to practice, process or execute learning tasks can take advantage of this space for pre-teaching, re-teaching, or more practice.

HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC WRITING LAB

In this class, students will receive targeted instruction in academic writing skills. The class will follow the English curriculum the student is taking. The skills taught will be the same skills assessed in their English classes (petal paragraph writing, analytical reading, APA format, conventions of standard English, etc.). The first 30 minutes of class are devoted to English-targeted instruction. The rest of the time can be used to work on upcoming assignments. The students’ English co-teachers will teach the class.

MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL MATH LAB

Provides additional assistance and resources to students who may be struggling with mathematical concepts. Math skills, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and problem-solving abilities. Concept Comprehension: clarification of student understanding of the Mathematical concepts taught in their regular Math classes. Homework and Assignment Support: assist students with completing homework assignments and preparing for quizzes and tests related to their Math coursework. Confidence Building: boosts students' confidence in their math abilities, reducing anxiety and fear associated with Math. Re-teaching of Mathematical concepts and skills.

ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE (ENL) PROGRAM

Students whose proficiency in English is lower than CNG’s expectations are given support with their English language development in the classroom or in pull-out sessions. Students are assessed to determine their specific needs, and instruction is planned according to their level of proficiency. The specialist works together with the homeroom teachers to provide the adequate support to each student while they acquire the language and become independent in the classroom.
