In ninth grade, students will be taking part in a project where they will visit the Golfo de Morrosquillo. The project will be focused on how the economy has a direct daily relationship in a person’s life and the perceptions and realities of living in coastal Colombia and the sorts of cooperation and conflicts that exist in this area. It also looks at marine life and how different traits impact the success of the different populations. The program is based around the United Nations sustainable development goal Life Below Water. The program works in conjunction with the local group Afrovismar and will have a focus on collecting data about the mangrove population in Punta Seca and will also support construction of mangrove boxes to continue the all important planting project being run by the same group.

Students will start their journey with a flight to Monteria and then bus out to Rincón del Mar. There, they will meet with peers from a local science club and undertake collaborative work about mangroves. They will have a geography workshop but also there will be time for a visit to the local beach. They will get some kayak training and then hit the ocean as they paddle over to Punta Seca. At Punta Seca they will set up the beach campsite they will be using for the next two nights. There will be some time for a bit of solo time which is always a nice moment in such a gorgeous setting. They will work with locals on their mangrove project, both building and collecting data with and for them. They will get a bit dirty in this activity. Then, they have a challenge by choice to go to Cabruna Island. Swim or paddle? They decide. There will be loads of beach activities available (slackline, snorkeling, volleyball, natural crafts). They will get to try their hand at outdoor cooking on camp stoves. Then, they continue their way by kayak where they will change into a motorized boat that will take them to Isla Tintipan. They will stay in a hotel there and boy, will that bed feel great. Then, it will be time for snorkeling, both in mangroves and coral. FInally, it will be time to boat, bus and fly back home after an incredible unforgettable experience!!!

Scope and Sequence

  • The connection to class on this CWW program has both a humanities and science focus. By meeting other communities, they will have the opportunity to reflect about how CNG and our community represent the diversity within Colombia. They will use this destination to see the visible history of Colombia. They will discuss social exclusion in Colombia. They will have time to converse with people in communities to have the chance to understand the history of the communities' forefathers and reflect on how Colombia's history impacts the possibility of fairness for all colombians.
  • In the field of science, there will be focus on how humans affect natural ecological processes through agriculture, urban development, and industry. They will look at the ecological relationships and biodiversity in reefs and mangroves. They will focus on looking for solutions to current issues. This science work spans far wider in time than the CWW visit itself, they will spend extended time in class working on their projects with presentations to relevant parties and ending with presentations to the upcoming eighth graders.
  • We will be focusing on the learner profile of being innovators on this CWW. This innovation will specifically be connected to their biology class.
  • There will be a core value focused on responsibility looking particularly at what is going to be your role in adult life, your place in society. Success skills will be focused around self management and effective communication (with each other and the communities we will be spending time with). We will explore how communities can experience joy and happiness without lots of commodities. (This links to history and the industrial revolution).
  • Outdoor skills will be focused on further developing water and camping skills. There will be physical activity approximately 5 hours on two days (paddling).
  • There will be significant preparation prior to travel to prepare students for the science component of this program and their work with Afrovismar.
