Classroom Without Walls: Families: 1st grade: Bioparque

Bioparque

The first grade WILDLIFE GUARDIANS visit Bioparque la Reserva  (26 km; approximately 1 ¼ hours from CNG) where students explore a reserve focused on giving a second opportunity in life to animals rescued from illegal trafficking. Bioparque contributes to the conservation of wildlife (fauna and flora) and natural resources through environmental education projects and investigation about biodiversity and Colombian ecosystems. Throughout their visit to Bioparque students will make connections about the structure and function of body parts and launch their biomimicry unit. They will also learn about illegal trafficking and common household pests. Partway through the day we will be introduced to predator bird species in an educational bird show giving them the opportunity to see predator species up close.

Scope and Sequence

  • This experience is designed to launch the biomimicry unit in class. This hands-on and close up animal and plant experience gives us many opportunities to explore how humans use examples from nature to inspire the process of problem solving (biomimicry). Bioparque will support our classroom learning about plants and animals, and there is also a focus on human animal interactions where they look at the questions ¨Why are the animals where they are? Why are they not living in the wild?¨ Once we return from our experience, we will use what we learned throughout the rest of our science unit where students will use the structures and functions of animals and plants to solve problems here on CNG campus.
  • We are going to focus on being innovators for their learner profile as this will support their CNG problem solving later in their science unit.
  • In terms of outdoor skills, students should be encouraged to pack basic supplies in a small backpack for a day trip independently. They will be given a simple checklist to support them in this process.
  • We will focus on the core value of responsibility and discuss ways we can support Colombian fauna and flora in our daily actions and the success skill communication throughout the day. This communication will have a focus on journaling which will be supported by the travel journal they will begin to fill out throughout their day at Bioparque.
  • As they explore SDG 15 (sustainable development goal) that looks at life on land, we look at some of the norms that help us live in respectful, caring, responsible ways while trying to foster integrity and investigate our core values.
