Classroom Without Walls: Families: K4: Finkana

Finkana

The FARM ANIMALS EXPLORER visits Finkana (44 km; approximately 1¼ hours from CNG) where students interact with a diverse range of domestic animals. Finkana is a space designed to revive the connection between Colombians and their natural and cultural environment. Students will be able to give milk to a goat kid, visit the horses, cows, pigs and other animals at the park, groom a pony, give grain to the chickens, hold and pet rabbits, go on a horse and carriage ride and finish off the day with a wonderful horse show just for them.

Scope and Sequence

  • In class, students are looking at the structure and function of animals and differentiating characteristics between living and non living. Finkana gives them a lot of opportunities to make connections to class by physically touching animal parts to explore the concept of function; reflection activities in the moment and filling in their special travel journal. Before travelling, they will focus on the science skill related to modeling where they will model an animal body part and explain how the structure will help an animal meet its needs.
  • We are going to focus on innovation for their learner profile with the modeling activity mentioned above.
  • As a very first CWW experience, the outdoor skill students should focus on is to accompany an adult at home to pack basic supplies in a small backpack for a day trip.
  • We will focus on the core value of caring and practice the success skill self management throughout the day. There will be a focus on the importance of rules to keep us safe which connects back to class where they learn about the importance of rules in society. This is their first experience in a CWW to begin the development of autonomy and empathy that they will continue to work on all the way through to their 11th grade CWW.
  • As they explore SDG 15 (sustainable development goal) that looks at life on land, they explore the needs of the farm animals. They look at their enclosures, which doubles back to those relationships between living and non living things.
