Classroom Without Walls: Families: K5: Granja Derracamandaca

Granja Decarramandaca

The COLLECTOR'S EDITION visits Derracamandaca (40 km; approximately 1¼ hours from CNG) where students interact with a permaculture influenced farm experience. They will be able to admire and feed trout, learn about compost, explore a garden, understand about sheep and wool, make bread, see how a cow is milked and learn about the process of cheese and of course have the chance to eat the delicious bread they made in the wood fired oven.

Scope and Sequence

  • In class, students are looking at how animals and plants depend on their environment for survival and how humans depend on plants and animals for our survival. Throughout the day, students will witness and understand the life cycle of plants from seeds to harvest, as well as where materials like wool (from sheep to create clothing) and milk (specifically milking process and to be used as cheese) come from. They will learn about the importance of composting in the process of creating nutrients to add to the plant life cycle when they plant seedlings in the farm's vegetable garden. In the process of making bread, they will explore the importance of the steps required to create a final product.
  • We will focus on the core values of respect and responsibility and the success skill of critical thinking, which are all important on a farm and can transfer back into the classroom environment and on. There will also be a focus on developing autonomy, empathy and cooperation.
  • As they explore SDG 15 (sustainable development goal) that looks at life on land, they explore the needs of the farm animals. They look at their enclosures, which doubles back to those relationships between living and non living things.
  • We are going to focus on being change agents for their learner profile, which will also connect with the concept of class rules and the importance of responsibility.
  • As a very first CWW experience, the outdoor skill students should focus on is with the support of an adult at home to pack basic supplies in a small backpack for a day trip.
  • We will focus on the core value of caring and practice the success skill self management throughout the day. There will be a focus on the importance of rules to keep us safe, which connects back to class where they learn about the importance of rules in society.
  • As they explore SDG 15 (sustainable development goal) that looks at life on land, they explore the needs of the farm animals. They look at their enclosures, which doubles back to those relationships between living and non living things.
