Our sixth grade Magdalena Medio program will take us first for a delicious traditional breakfast in Guaduas before completing our transfer to Honda. While in Honda, we are going to visit the Magdalena River Museum, a very hands-on museum all about the importance of the Magdalena River in Colombian Society. We will also go on a tour of the historic town of Honda, an absolutely beautiful Colombian town with a rich heritage. While in our rotations, we will also have a workshop with local fishermen and learn about their tools of the trade. We will also explore the Charca de Guarinocito (Guarinocito lagoon) which is famous for its bird watching. While there, we will explore in traditional style boats and do some bird spotting and also walk through a forest. Then we will head out to Mariquita where we will have a very popular exotic fruits workshop which will get us ready for some serious competition in our very own exotic fruits masterchef competition. We will also travel to Estación Cocorna. This is where we will camp overnight, but most importantly where we will meet Chavita and she will teach us all about her turtle sanctuary. Later that day, we will get to spend time with our peers from Estación Cocorna as together we run and have fun playing in the feria de la alegría. What fun community outreach that will be. Now that we understand much better the importance of the conservation of different turtle species, we will have the chance to take a river boat to see waterfalls, release hatchlings and try an absolutely delicious fiambre on the side of the river. We will then head to Doradal for a night of board games before heading back to Bogotá the next day.
