In developing the concept for our production, we explored the fascinating world of Icelandic folklore with the guidance of expert Terry Gunnell. Iceland’s perspective on life, nature, and magic is distinct from much of the world, particularly in its portrayal of trolls—not as fearsome, solitary creatures, but as protectors of the land and wildlife. According to Icelandic tradition, trolls care for the puffins, safeguarding their nests and eggs among the coastal cliffs. Inspired by these legends, our students designed masks to embody the essence of these magical beings. Drawing from Icelandic sagas and the vivid imagery of Brian Pilkington’s work, which illustrates trolls as ancient beings now turned to stone, the masks reflect the deep connection between nature and folklore. Through this creative process, we bring to life the hidden people and the rich mythology that continues to shape Icelandic storytelling.
