CNG HS Academic Program Guide 2023 - 2024: Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES AT CNG

CNG offers all students the opportunity to challenge themselves in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These are rigorous course offerings which help students build the skills they need for their upcoming college years. CNG believes that students who challenge themselves in rigorous coursework learn more. For this reason, CNG fully supports students who decide to take on these challenges, and all students taking AP classes can be confident that their teachers will meet them where they are and take them as far as they can get in two semesters’ time. Based on this CNG philosophy, the most important prerequisite for AP coursework at CNG is student motivation.

To be successful in AP courses, students need to understand that demonstrated work ethic, motivation to succeed, and taking responsibility for one’s own learning are critical. In addition to student motivation, each course at CNG has established recommended prerequisites for course enrollment. Please refer to these as you consider the AP courses in which you wish to enroll. These prerequisites were determined to support student success; however, CNG recognizes that all learners are different. Some students who do not meet all recommended prerequisites may still wish to be considered for an AP course. Please see your Counselor if this is the case.

There are a number of benefits to taking an AP course at CNG. Students who score 3 or more on their AP exams may be eligible for college credit, advanced placement or both at many universities, including those in Colombia. In addition, having AP credits on your CNG transcript communicates to colleges and universities your readiness to take on the next challenge.

AP EXAM EXPECTATIONS:

  1. All students in AP classes are expected to sit for the exam in May. The school orders exams for all enrolled students plus those students who have petitioned for an additional AP exam.

This fee must be paid or a student will not be entitled to graduate from CNG. b. In addition, consequences under the CNG Code of Honor will be considered depending on the nature of the disruption to the examination.

ADD & DROP DATES FOR HONORS AND AP CLASSES

In the first semester, students who desire to add and/or drop an honors or AP course have the first six weeks to do so. The following steps need to be taken:

  • AP Add/Drop form must be completed with student, parent, and teacher signatures and turned into the HS Office by the due date. • A request must be sent to administration.
  • These requests can only be approved by the AP Coordinator and HS Administration.
  • Students who wish to drop one AP for another (AP Human Geography to AP Art, for example) need to have been approved in the recommendation process in order to make the request. In addition, both teachers need to sign the Add/Drop form.
  • Students are responsible for making up any work that has been missed in the new class.
  • In advance of semester two, students may make a request to drop an AP course. In addition, students may request to move into an Honors-level class or from an Honors-level class to the corresponding regular class during this time frame. The following steps need to be taken:
    • AP Add/Drop form must be completed with student, parent, and teacher signatures and turned into the HS Office two weeks before the start of semester two.
    • No grace period for add/drop is permitted in semester 2.

PROCESS CANCEL AN AP SCORE

There are two ways a student can cancel an AP score. First, if they have NOT listed colleges in their AP account online, they can have any score they wish removed at any time. Second, if the student DID list a university in their AP account online, they must request to have that score canceled by June 15 of the testing year or it will be sent to the college(s) listed. An exam score that is withheld or cancelled will not appear on the reportand schools will not see that the student has taken the exam.
