ACTING FOR LIFE 9 - 12

This is a semester course were students learn acting tools that are useful in everyday situations while communicating with others. The focus of this class is to empower students to present themselves clearly and professionally, teach students how to think on their feet, and show students gain respect and admiration in their community. Through the application and repetition of exercises, students learn how to empathize their strengths and turn any communication problem into a natural situation. Students will get the chance to practice these skills in a safe space and work on self-confidence.

PREAP THEATER 9 - 12

Do you like theater and performing arts? You will love this class! You will be able to know, explore and act at a very deep level! We will be working with Musicals (West Side Story & In the Heights), Greek Theater (Antigone), Commedia dell’Arte and Contemporary Plays (Peter And the Starcatcher). Pre-AP Theater instruction highlights these skills as well, inviting students to analyze and respond to works of theater, develop and refine their own ideas by drawing on a variety of source material, and constructively respond to the work of peers as it develops. *Pre-AP courses are designed to support all students across varying levels of readiness. They are not honors or advanced courses. Participation in Pre-AP courses allows students to slow down and focus on the most essential and relevant concepts and skills.

BEGINNING ENSEMBLE 9 - 12

Beginning Ensemble is a course for students who already know how to play the piano, bass, drums or guitar; your typical rock band instruments. In this class we will focus on instrument technique, exploring basic rock band elements, music theory and playing as a group. This could be your start as a member of CNG’s ensemble groups.

Advanced Ensemble is the top Rock Band at CNG. This course is designed for students who have a high level of musicianship and technique. In this class, students will focus on playing mainly rock and pop styles, but open to other musical genres that fit the ensemble setting. Admission is granted on an audition basis to those who feel advanced on their instruments and confident in group playing. In this class you will experience and be expected to play music at a high level. Since students can take this class every year, the expectations for technique, leadership, and playing ability become higher. Students are graded on a tiered level as they progress through the program. This course is meant to be taken for an entire year to support progress, however it can be taken for a semester on teacher approval.
Prerequisite: Audition basis.
SYMPHONIC BAND 9 - 12 A & B

This is the most advanced symphony band we offer at CNG and students will find a strong community within this course. Band is both a class and club. Students in band will play and perform at a high level. Students will rehearse music that they select, work with small groups, and play as a large band. Students get the chance to work with professional visiting artists, play different instruments, and be involved in a variety of different activities. Since students can take this class every year, the expectations for instrument technique, leadership, and playing ability are assessed at a higher level as students grow. This band will have the opportunity to travel, and perform outside of school throughout the year. (Orchestra players are very welcome).

MUSIC FOR LIFE 9 - 12

Do you love music, but don’t like performing, then this is the course for you! Music is an art that you will interact with your whole life, it is useful to have a strong foundation to understand it. You will get the chance to explore the connection between music and culture, music and history, and music and your life. This is a great course to prepare you for any musical experience in the future. We will play, create, discuss, listen, analyze, produce, and enjoy music together.

INTRODUCTION TO RUMBA 9 - 12

Rumba is a one semester elective class where students choose to participate voluntarily in order to enjoy and develop skills in dancing. Students will experience aerobic entertainment using different rhythms: dancing music, samba, raggaeton, reggae, salsa, folklore, among others. Participation in this class will help increase functioning of the cardiovascular system, improve physical fitness, and heighten psychological well-being. Steps and circuits will be used in the class. This course can count as ½ credit in Fine Arts or Physical Education.

LATIN DANCE 11 -12

Latin Dance is a course focused on learning how to identify and dance some of the Latin American rhythms. The emphasis is on Salsa and it’s different styles; on one, on two, colombian style and the different cuban styles like Cha Cha Cha, Son, Casino and Rueda de Casino, we also learn how to dance Bachata and Kizomba. All of these dances are performed in partners and or in groups, which gives students the opportunity to enhance their social development while they learn how to create conversations through body language. Is a very good opportunity for students to learn how to treat and interact with partners in a very respectful manner. This course can count as ½ credit in Fine Arts or Physical Education.

THEATER I
COMEDY AND IMPROVISATION 9 - 12

This class offers a general overview of the world of theatre, focusing on your personal development as an actor and as a theatre enthusiast. Students will engage in games and exercises that stimulate the discovery of movement, space, voice and improvisation. Students will be exposed to a wide range of dramatic literature and will develop fundamental acting skills as a preparation for interpreting classical and contemporary texts. Students will be given opportunities to stretch their imagination, focus their creative energies, and work alone or in groups to bring their inter characters to life.

THEATER PRODUCTION AND DESIGN 9 - 12

A project-based class balancing theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience with theatre systems including audio, visual, video, staging, props and makeup. Students would work within the framework of the Design Thinking process to support projects from the school community (i.e. school musical). Developmentally appropriate for high school, assessments will focus on the performance of fundamental tasks and “do”s for operation of a theatre.

Intermediate Ensemble is for students who are excited about playing in a rock/pop band. In this class students will play current rock and pop music at a beginner to intermediate level. Students will learn fundamentals of music, instrument technique, playing in an ensemble, and work to build confidence in their playing. Since students can take this class every year, the expectations for technique, leadership, and playing ability become higher. Students are graded on a tiered level as they progress through the program. This course can be taken for a semester or a year. (This class is aimed at guitar, electric bass, piano, drums, voice, and but open to other musicians)

The History of Art and Culture course seeks to develop a critical vision of diverse historic and cultural processes that were vital for the development of art in all its forms. The course presents students with a unique opportunity to learn about the complex ties that interlock history and culture. Students will delve into the patterns and relationships that exist between various areas of knowledge. Throughout the course, students will examine and analyze the most representative manifestations of art since the beginning of time. The course looks to develop expertise in the visual identification of art and a keen sense of the period and context in which the artwork was created. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the techniques employed by the artists as well as the importance of art patrons, politics, and religion. The course focuses on the relationship between artist and society in order to understand art as a manifestation of the spirit of its time period. The History of Art and Culture is an elective course which can be applied toward credits in Fine Arts or Social Studies. It is a great introduction and preparation for AP Art History. This course can count as a Fine Arts or Social Studies elective.

The music honors courses provide students with a challenging and innovative curriculum. This course is taught within the Symphonic or Choir course and may require students to complete additional projects, practice and prepare outside of class time and arrange to meet with the teacher as needed. The requirements for these courses provide a template for being a successful musician and allow students to experience what great musicians do. This year-long course is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have successfully completed previous band/chorus courses and have been recommended by their and/or have successfully completed an audition.
AP MUSIC THEORY 10 - 12 A & B

The AP Music Theory course corresponds to one-totwo semesters of typical, introductory college music theory coursework that covers topics such as musicianship, theory, and musical materials and procedures. Musicianship skills, including dictation and listening skills, sight singing, and harmony, are an important part of the course. Through the course, students develop the ability to recognize, understand, and describe basic materials and processes of tonal music that are heard or presented in a score. Development of aural (listening) skills is a primary objective. Performance is also part of the curriculum through the practice of sight-singing. Students learn basic concepts and terminology by listening to and performing a wide variety of music. Notational skills, speed, and fluency with basic materials are emphasized.
Prerequisites: Prospective students should be able to read and write musical notation and have basic performance skills with voice or an instrument.
