The first benefit of the AP program is added challenge.Students within the program are able to progress
as fast and as far as 
their motivation and ability allows.
Certain teachers in the program have assignments that allow them to work with the same students during a period of two to four years; this is the second benefit of the AP Academy. The long-term association between educators and learners is beneficial for both parties in terms of student/teacher relationships as well as commitment to learning and teaching at CNG. This also allows more personalized knowledge of each student to provide universities with effective letters of recommendation when the time comes.
Advanced Placement courses have become an important consideration for university admissions and having these credits in their academic transcripts is a huge third benefit for our students. The Dean of Admissions of Harvard University has been quoted saying that AP is already a better predictor of college grades than the SAT exams. Many top universities use AP courses and exam results as a deciding factor for college entrance. AP credits are also being used as a key factor in the scholarship granting process.
A fourth benefit comes in the form of college credits: a student who takes a number of AP exams can receive credit at top ranked universities both in Colombia and the USA.
The fifth benefit consists of a GPA enhancement determined by the school administration for all students taking Pre-AP and AP courses.
The Advanced Placement International Diploma (APID) is a globally recognized certificate for students with an international outlook. The APID challenges a student to display exceptional achievement on AP Exams across several disciplines and rewards them once the purpose is achieved.
To earn an APID, students must earn grades of three or higher on at least five AP Exams in the following content areas:
The following are the most general requirements for ALL CNG students interested in joining the AP Academy.
High Academic performance and expectations: students must have a grade average of 3.2 or above in their regular classes before entering the AP Academy.
Above average performance in Standardized Tests is required of AP Students. For grades 5 through 10 these tests are MAP and Stanford 10 where students should be in 70th percentile ranking (or above). For Grades 10 and 11 PSAT results are also taken into account.
Teacher Recommendation: all students applying must be recommended by the teacher who has previously worked with the in the area of the AP course they are interested in.
When the student does not meet one of the three basic requirements, a personal interview and case-by-case study will be done by the Admissions Committee.
Once enrolled in the academy, CNG students are challenged to:
show academic proficiency;
hold themselves to high academic integrity;
demonstrate proficiency in terms of life skills in the course;
The following situations may seriously jeopardize the enrollment of the student in the AP Academy and may cause removal from AP courses.
- students who do not meet the minimum expectations
- academic dishonesty
- skipping class
- frequent unexcused tardies
The due disciplinary process will be followed to determine the final consequences.
In first semester, students who desire to add and/or drop a Pre-AP or AP course have until the mid-point of the first quarter (mid-September) to do so. The following steps need to be taken:
- AP Academy Add/Drop form must be completed with student, parent, and teacher signatures and turned into the HS-MS Office by the due date
- a request must be sent to hsschedules@cng.edu (requests may only be approved by the AP Coordinator and HS/MS Administration)
Students who want to drop one AP for another need to be approved for the replacement course in the recommendation process and both AP teachers need to have signed the appropriate Add/Drop forms. Students are responsible for making up any work they may have missed in the first few weeks of the added AP course.
Students may request to drop a course in the AP Academy in the second semester of the school year. Students may also request to move from a regular class to Pre-AP or from a Pre-AP to the corresponding regular course during this time frame. The following steps need to be taken:
- AP Academy Add/Drop form must be completed with student, parent, and teacher signatures and turned into the HS-MS Office by the due date
- requests must be approved by AP Coordinator and/or HS Administration
The final date for any second semester AP changes is the midpoint of the third quarter.
IMPORTANT: Students who drop a Pre-AP/AP class or who do not take the AP test in the subject will lose the AP designation of the course (course will be titled Advanced and not Advanced Placement).
With this scholarship CNG hopes to set up an incentive for students to participate and be rewarded for their additional efforts. The criteria which guide this scholarship are:
1) The student must have a GPA of 3.5 or above in the last semester, to be eligible.
2) The student must maintain this GPA, which will be revised at the end of each semester in order to receive the scholarship for the following term.
3) The student must enroll and participate in more than three (3) AP or Pre-AP courses.
4) The maximum scholarship awarded will be for 50% of the cost of the Pre-AP/AP courses the student has signed up for.
If your child fulfills these conditions, he/she will be awarded this scholarship. Please contact the administration as soon as the student meets these requirements.
